Windows XP PPPoE Client Setup
This knowledge base article will outline the steps necessary to setup Windows XP for a PPPoE (dynamic IP) DSL connection. Just follow the steps below:
Create a PPPoE client connection
You can install the PPPoE client just like you install any other dial-up networking connection. To create a PPPoE client connection, follow these steps:
- Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network and Internet Connections.
- Click Network Connections, and then click Create a new connection in the Network Tasks pane (Example 1.1) or from the pulldown menu, select File, then click New Connection.

- After the New Connection Wizard starts, click Next (Example 1.2).

- Select Connect to the Internet, and then click Next (Example 1.3).

- Select Set up my connection manually, and then click Next (Example 1.4).

- A PPPoE (dynamic IP) connection requires a user name and password. Select
Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password, and then click Next (Example 1.5).

- Type the Internet service provider (ISP) name that your ISP provided, and then click Next (Example 1.6).

- The Internet Account Information screen appears (Example 1.7). Fill in the fields as follows:
- Logon Information:
- User Name = Enter {dslphonenumber}@value.net for the user name (example: 3332221111@value.net).
- Password = Enter the password for this e-mail account.
- Confirm password = Enter the password one more time to confirm it.
- Important: Passwords are case-sensitive. Ensure your Caps Lock is disabled.
- The two checkboxes are optional. They are usually checked by default.
Example 1.7
- You have successfully configured Windows XP for a PPPoE connection. To complete the wizard, check the Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop checkbox the click Finish.

Example 1.8
- To use your newly created PPPoE connection, simply click the shortcut on your desktop to launch the Connect screen (Example 1.9). Leave the password field the way it is and then click Connect.

NOTE: If you selected the option Use this account name and password when anyone connects to the Internet from this computer in step 8, the connection screen (Example 1.7), then the Anyone who uses this computer option will be selected. If you want it set to Me only, you will have to create a new connection again without selecting the Use this account name and password when anyone connects to the Internet from this computer option in step 8 (Example 1.7) to avoid receiving a username and/or password error.
